GFS joins 10:10 and aims to reduce its carbon footprint by 10% in one year.
GFS is committed to reducing its impact upon the environment and creating sustainable practices. The 10:10 target is a 10% reduction in emissions over a twelve month period. Joining this campaign will assist GFS in its 2011 green initiative of which the first step will be the introduction of paperless e-billing.
The 10:10 concept is simple and is something everyone can get involved in. Its members include universities, colleges, national attractions as well as individuals such as Colin Firth, Sara Cox and Ian McEwan. GFS will be joining companies such as O2, Royal Mail and Microsoft amongst many others to combat climate change.
10:10 was founded by Franny Armstrong, director of the climate change blockbuster “The Age of Stupid”. She believes a 10% reduction in a year is a far more manageable goal rather than targets such as 80% by 2050 set by policymakers.
The idea was inspired by a George Monbiot article highlighting the kind of policies that were needed to cut the UK’s emissions very quickly, and the Climate Safety report, identifying a 10% cut in the developed world's emissions by the end of 2010.
10:10 was formally launched on 1 September, 2009 and in the first 72 hours more than 10,000 individuals, businesses, schools and organisations signed up.
